stories of a long struggle

Proud to be Nuba

stories of a long struggle

A book by Nanne op ‘t Ende

For fourteen years, between 1987 and 2001, the Nuba peoples of Southern Kordofan were caught in a war against the Central Government of Sudan. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced, some escaping the violence, others forcefully relocated by the Government. Tens of thousands died of violence and hunger. Those who continued their resistance lived in poverty, lacking education, health, care or even clean drinking water.

In 1997, Nanne op ‘t Ende traveled to the Nuba Mountains for thefirst time, to document the impact of the war on the Nuba peoples. He returned in 1998 and 2000 and witnessed how the Nuba became more and more cornered, until intensive international diplomacy led to a ceasefire in Southern Kordofan. After the 2004 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, op ‘t Ende made another trip to the area, in 2006.

He went around by car, bus, or lorry, looking for old friends, meeting new people: farmers who became fighters; commanders who became politicians; people who never carried a gun. He asked them about their life during the war, and how they feel about the new situation. Their stories are presented in Proud to be Nuba, together with a history that serves as a background. Jan Pronk, Special Envoy for the Secretary General of the United Nations in Sudan at the time, wrote the preface.

The book is illustrated with dozens of portraits; with work by four renowned photographers who captured the impressive Nuba cultures; and with historic photos from the Sudan Archive of the Durham University Library. Throughout the book, photos by op ‘t Ende provide an intimate view of life in the Nuba Mountains during and after the war.
